A Swakopmund man is expected to appear today in the local magistrate’s court on a charge of murder after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend Chrizelda Smith to death. The incident happened early Saturday morning at Independence Street in Mondesa. Community affairs commander, Inspector Ileni Shapumba on Saturday said the couple who shared an apartment allegedly had an argument prior to the incident. He said the suspect allegedly kicked Smith out of the apartment and also left the apartment to buy a cigarette nearby. He allegedly met his girlfriend, walking back home accompanied by two friends. “The deceased allegedly drew a kitchen knife on him when he approached them. He allegedly disarmed her and used the same knife to stab her,” Shapumba said. Smith was declared dead at the scene by paramedics from the Swakopmund state hospital.  The suspect was also apprehended at the murder scene.

Meanwhile, a man was arrested on Friday evening for attempted murder at Oshikuku after he allegedly hit his colleague on the head with a plastic pick handle. The two men are allegedly employed at a construction site at Oshikuku. According to the regional police chief Commissioner Titus Shikongo, the suspect allegedly turned up intoxicated at the site and started provoking the victim, while threatening to stab him. “This allegedly led to an argument between the two which led to the suspect hitting the victim with a plastic pick handle on the head,” said Shikongo. As a result of the attack, the victim sustained serious injuries to the head. The victim was treated at Oshikuku Roman Catholic Hospital but was later transferred to Oshakati. The suspect has been arrested and investigation into the matter continues. -edeklerk@nepc.com.na
