2014-04-08Staff Report 2 "WINDHOEK – The Namibia Football Association (NFA) is piloting a Women’s Under-20 Super League with seven school teams already registered and competing, while fostering regular competition among the youth and school-based ladies football talent. According to Jackey Gertze of the NFA Women’s Desk, the league kicked off on March 27, 2014 and has so far seen the completion of 3 rounds of matches played between teams from Windhoek, Rehoboth and Okahandja. “The whole idea is to create a positive beneficial relationship and cooperation between school-based girls’ football and the NFA. The league also gives a platform to players under the age of 20, which guarantees regular play for such core players of the national team,” said Gertze. She added that the league will also provide the ideal platform to select and prepare the Namibian team for the annual Zone Six Games in December later this year. “Zimbabwe will host the Zone Six Games and it is an important competition for us to prepare adequately, so this league will surely help us have more ladies to choose from and to have a formidable team,” explained Gertze. The NFA Women’s U-20 Super League is supported by football partners Fifa and the German development agency GiZ and highlights the health and education benefits the players can derive from the beautiful game. The Windhoek-based league is coordinated by national team player Mamie Kasaona and administered by Raeree Cole Mungendje with senior Gladiators assuming the role of referees. Matches take place on Thursdays and Fridays at Eldorado Secondary School. Eldorado currently lead the log standings after 3 rounds of matches, followed by Centaurus and Rehoboth High School combined team in that order. Other participating teams are Okahandja Invitational, A. Shipena High School, Cosmos High School and Hochland High School. Eenhana, in the Ohangwena Region will host the next pilot project for the Under-20 Women’s Super League once all logistics are in place. The league held its first competitive tourney at the NFA Technical Centre in Windhoek, which was won by the Galz and Goals team when they defeated Eldorado High School 2-1 last weekend.
