2014-03-24Staff Report 2 "RUNDU - Nurses from 20 health facilities are undergoing a workshop on adolescent friendly reproductive health service delivery in Rundu. The workshop is intended to combat teenage pregnancy in the two Kavango regions by equipping as well as providing participants with essential skills, knowledge and attitudes towards providing adolescent-friendly reproductive health services to teenagers, who for various reasons in most cases do not open up to health providers about their health issues. One of the main focuses was on contraceptive service delivery to reduce the high reported teenage pregnancies in the two Kavango regions. This workshop is a follow-up to a task force, which was established to address high teenage pregnancy in the two regions, realising there was a need to train or capacitate nurses in dealing with teenagers. The task force comprised of members of the public and NGO sectors. The task force also identified 10 schools around Rundu for prevention of teenage pregnancy interventions. The initiative is being carried out in consultation with the chief medical officer of the Rundu state hospital, who is also an active member of the task force on teenage pregnancy prevention programme in Kavango West and Kavango East. The seven-day workshop started on Monday, March 17 and will end tomorrow Tuesday, March 25. It is tailored to address the specific learning needs of the 20 clinical staff from 10 healthcare facilities in and around Rundu.
