Writers Clash over Article
"By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK In a strongly worded press release the PEN writers' chapter in Namibia vehemently denounced an article about its chairperson's views on the executive committee's incompetence. The article, headlined ""Infighting Dogs Writers' Body"", as part of an interview with the organization's chairperson, Mvula ya Nangolo, appeared two weeks ago in Art/Life. ""The committee met on Thursday May 11 and concluded that the article was very misleading, giving a wrong image of the internal affairs of the organization. The impression was created that the PEN Centre was engulfed with problems of in-fighting and underperformance. The committee wishes to state that the content of the article is devoid of any truth,"" the statement said. Chairperson Mvula ya Nangolo told Art/Life that he attended the committee meeting, but refused to sign the press release. ""Why should I have signed a letter aimed at discrediting myself in public? I stand by what I said in the Art/Life article,"" Ya Nangolo said on inquiry. The press release was signed by the vice chairman Joseph Aula, H. Huber, O. Iithete, H. Mundengi, Hiyalwa and Enid Milton."
