Two years in prison for 10 kg cannabis
Windhoek A 30-year-old man from Rundu was sentenced on Thursday to two years in prison for being in possession of marijuana. John Hawanga was sentenced by Magistrate Jermaine Muchali in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court to three years in prison – of which 12 months were suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of the same offence during the period of suspension. Hawanga faced a charge of dealing in drugs, to which he pleaded guilty. He was arrested on Monday when he was found with cannabis weighing 10.48 kilogrammes, worth an estimated N$31 440. Hawanga explained that he used to work for his former teacher in Rundu, making bricks. He said he did not have N$150 that he needed to pay for his drivers’ license, after he had passed his driving test. “So I decided to come to my mother-in-law at Mururani to cut wood,” he added. Hawanga continued by saying that one of his customers bought wood from him for N$10 and asked if he could transport the wood to Rundu, but Hawanga replied that he did not have money to go to Rundu, whereupon the customer informed Hawanga that he should wait and that he would return the next day. “The next day he returned and came back with marijuana and told me I can sell it in Windhoek and make money to come and pay for my licence,” Hawanga informed the court. Hawanga said when he arrived in Windhoek he soon contacted a friend, who smokes marijuana, who then asked Hawanga for a little of the cannabis to see how it works. “The next day the police came and asked if I am selling cannabis and I said ‘yes’,” he told the court. Hawanga will now have to serve a total of two years in prison. Magistrate Jermaine Muchali presided, while Erastus Hatutale represented the State.
