2016-04-04Staff Report 2 Windhoek Staff from D&P Engineers and EFK Trading donated a wheelchair to the six-year-old girl who was recently run over by a car, which resulted in both legs having to be amputated. Rejoice Kandukira, a Grade 1 pupil, sat on stairs with one of her older twin brothers outside a school, which is opposite their house, when a pick-up vehicle, allegedly driven by a drunk driver, rammed into her. The bubbly and friendly Rejoice had just started schooling and wants to become a doctor one day. Rejoice, fondly known as ‘Ri’ at home, is the last born of four children and had interest in modelling but now faces life without limbs. Colleagues Elton Katjaimo, Timo David and Samuel Kashokulu handed the wheelchair to Rejoice at Paramount Private Hospital. The wheelchair is worth N$6 000. Katjaimo, who recently learnt that he is a distant relative of the girl’s mother, said it would not be the first nor last time they will be involved in Rejoice’s life. He said they are willing to assist her for as long as she lives. Her mother, Dominica Kandukira, said the wheelchair donation lifts a lot of weight off her shoulders. “I know she (Rejoice) will use it going to school and around and about. It will be useful,” she said. Dominica said her daughter is recovering well and she is now aware that she does not have her feet and legs. However, Dominica said she is pleased that her daughter remembers events leading to her disability, which is a sign that she did not suffer a brain injury. Last week young entrepreneur Petrus Hatupopi also visited Rejoice in hospital and donated N$600 to her mother. “It is during these hard times that we as a nation must come together and support each other. By doing so we are saving our own lives, and this is very true because you never know that maybe one day somehow Rejoice will make a positive change, which will benefit you and me or even the whole world,” he said.
