Young Stergiadis tumbles record
…impresses overall TSUMEB - Heleni Stergiadis of Dolphins Swimming Club broke the long-standing record of Christine Briedenhann in the Girls 9-10 age group individual medley of the inaugural edition of the Bank Windhoek Long Course Swimming Gala event in Tsumeb on Saturday. The record was set in December 2006. Heleni displayed the best performance of the day by breaking the record and also took several first places and improved most of her previous personal best times. The two best overall swims of the day, according to FINA (International Swimming Federation) points, went to Zanré Oberholzer (NSA) for her 100m backstroke with 621 points and 200m backstroke with 604 points. Zanré has once again shown her dominance in these events as she prepares for the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Youth Games to be held during August 16-28, 2014 in Nanjing, China. Not far behind in the overall standing in 3rd place was Molina Smalley of Dolphins Swimming Club with 590 points in the 800m freestyle event. Namibia’s international swimmer Quinton Delie, also of Dolphins Swimming Club, took 4th spot on the FINA points table with 586 points for the 100m butterfly event. The youngster recently returned to Namibia after completing his studies in South Africa where he trained at the High Performance Centre of the University of Pretoria. “With the swimmers having displayed quality swimming at the start of the season and a long standing record having been broken, the rest of the season is set to be filled with action-packed races,” said Angelika Diekmann, General Secretary of NASU. Although the water was cold early in the morning breeze, it soon heated up and the swimmers did not take a back seat from what they do best as they swam a multitude of personal best times. The swimmers had a total of 714 splashes. Seventy-one swimmers took part in the first event with the gala to be staged at the Western Suburbs swimming pool in Windhoek next month. By Staff Reporter
