Young women’s indaba successful
WINDHOEK “Leadership is not about speed, ideas, efficiency, or power. It is about knowing your own limitations and celebrating the gifts of others. It is growing in wisdom, understanding the number of our days, and seeking to understand rather than be understood. It is caring for people, always hoping for, and expecting the best. It is being brave enough to be vulnerable in front of others. It is seeing the big picture of where things are, and building a road to the future with limited casualties. It is helping each person to sing their song from the heart, and leading the band in praise to their Maker,” goes a poem by Dan Beerens. The poem was one of many delivered at the just-ended annual young women’s indaba in the capital, which has once again been described as fruitful by allowing 120 young women the opportunity to network, to be motivated and to be inspired as future leaders by the invited speakers. The fourth edition of the annual event ran took place on Saturday, October 24. It was held under the theme ‘Girls’ Leadership, Making a Difference’. It brought about 100 young women from across the country together for a one day, with a fully-packed schedule of motivational talks, poetry readings, choir performances, and a competition, with young lasses winning prizes by answering questions about the event and what they gained from the day. It started with a five km walk after and the first 20-30 young women past the finishing line were rewarded with gifts of motivational books, donated by Book Den, Orumbonde Books and You Are A Gift Trust partners and trustees. The conference this year hosted about 100 Grade 11 Senior Representative Councils (SRC)’s members, who would be head prefects in 2016 at different schools. The objective of the occasion was to cover many topics related to young women in the hope of engaging girl leaders to experiencing more joy, peace and contentment and to steer towards self-acceptance, self-confidence and growth through personal experience. Breakfast and refreshments were served and the girls had some time to network and exchange ideas with their peers. Last year the event saw 400 young ladies with a desire to overcome their current circumstances, as well as more than 50 volunteers and spectators in attendance. National Young Women’s Day has been held for the past three years with support from various individuals, partners and corporate companies.
