Youths invited to part take in water competition!
"Today’s youth are called to assume the responsibility of empowering other youth promoting access to information and encouraging the exploration of ideas  that better develop the communities and the world at large . In support of realising this vision, the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWPSA) is inviting youth between 15 and 18 years  in Namibia and within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to take part in a written essay or story and visual photograph and art competition.  The competition aims to encourage youth to make their voices heard on the delivery of the post  2015 water development agenda by providing ideas and solutions that will contribute towards effective water resources management in the region. The theme of the competition is ""Why water is a precious resource inSouthern Africa beyond 2015""and  ties in with SADC’s aspirations for water management in the region that seeks sustainable water management for socio economic development and regional integration. This speaks to the implementation of the Regional Strategic Action Plan (RSAP). The RSAP serves as a work plan that guides the development and implementation of activities in the region’s water sector. The current RSAP III that has been running from 2011 and ends this year, 2015, covers the strategic areas of water governance, infrastructure development and water management. It calls for the achievement of the following three strategic objectives:  improve the impact of the plan on the ground which is, capacity development, climate change adaptation and socio economic development. The competition will provide an opportunity for the youth to add their voice to the ongoing discussions on the RSAP IV ,currently being formulated, as well as the delivery of the post 2015 development agenda that is also known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  The SDGs will replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which are expiring at the end of 2015. The SDGs are more ambitious than the MDGs and cover a broad range of interconnected issues; from sustainable economic growth, to social issues, to global public goods. Focusing on adding a voice for better water management, the youth will join others in the sector and beyond in coming up with ways for achieving Sustainable Development Goal six that seeks to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all”. Furthermore, with the 2015 World Water Day themed ‘WaterAnd Sustainable Development ’, the competition will allow the youth to articulate water’s role in the sustainable development agenda at the local level. The competition will be linked to the global GWP Sustainable Development Goal on Water Campaign called #Action2015. Submissions should be sent to the organiser of SADC Water Week, Bernadette Shalumbu, from the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia at bernadette.shalumbu@drfn.org.na. The deadline for submissions is Friday June 12 and winners will be announcement on June 15. For more information on the guidelines, competition categories, evaluation criteria’s, contact Bernadette at 061 377500.        "
