Windhoek
Following an extensive 48-hour manhunt the Namibian police have confirmed that they arrested a man yesterday suspected of shooting and fatally wounding Finnish national, Ronni Marco Kristian Uolevi, on Sunday.
The suspect is a Namibian male, aged 43, and was arrested at around 10h00 yesterday morning at his family house in the Windhoek North suburb.
The suspect, who cannot yet be named for legal reasons, is expected to appear in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court today.
New Era is reliably informed that at the time of his arrest the suspect was found in possession of his Namibian passport, which raised the suspicion that he was planning to flee the country. The suspected murder weapon, a firearm allegedly used in the shooting, is also in the hands of the police.
Inspector Slogan Matheus from the Police Public Relations Division said the suspect also pointed out to crime investigators the place where he had parked his vehicle, a Volswagen Polo, which was involved in a collision with Uolevi’s car.
“I can confirm to you that the police have arrested the suspect, a Namibian male, aged 43. The pistol used in the murder has also been found,” Matheus said.
The arrestee is alleged to have shot dead the 42-year-old Uolevi – who died shortly afterwards at the scene – after the Fin reportedly bumped into his car in the early hours of Sunday morning in a street outside Joker’s Bar along Bell Street in Windhoek’s southern industrial area.
Police investigators collected nine spent cartridges at the scene of the murder and it is understood they are currently conducting a post-mortem to determine how many times the victim was shot. Uolevi, who was married to a local medical doctor, was driving a Land Rover Discovery at the time, when he allegedly bumped into the suspect’s Volkswagen Polo.
“It is alleged that the deceased was driving a vehicle and bumped into another vehicle, a white Volkswagen Polo sedan, from behind. The driver of the Polo sedan jumped out of his vehicle and drew his firearm, a pistol. He shot randomly at the deceased’s vehicle and then drove away,” Matheus confirmed at a press briefing on Sunday.
