Regional council offices and clinics were some of the busiest places yesterday, as the Ministry of Health and Social Services started with a nationwide vaccination campaign against measles and rubella for all people, aged from nine months to 39 years. The campaign comes in response to the measles and rubella outbreak the country experienced over the past five years. The campaign will run until July 22. The campaign does not consider previous immunisation, meaning all people in the said age group should be immunised. Namibia experienced measles outbreaks in 2013 and 2014 and a surveillance system discovered that the outbreaks peaked from August to November, hence the vaccination in July. People who are sick and suffer from cancer, as well as pregnant women, are excluded as the vaccine can be dangerous to pregnant women.
