WINDHOEK – Namibia’s Presidential candidate and the incumbent Prime Minister, Dr Hage Geingob, has joined the chorus of those advocating for Namibians to come out en masse and attend football matches when the nt CAF Women’s Championships kick off.
The continental showpiece gets underway in earnest at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek tomorrow and promises to draw large crowds.
The former Etosha Lions Football Club (Chief Santos) tough tackling defender, took time off his busy schedule yesterday to meet a three-member delegation led by the president of the Namibia Football Association (NFA), John Muinjo, during a brief courtesy call at the Prime Mister’s Office.
Muinjo once again extended his gratitude towards the government and all the other stakeholders for their support and financial assistance, expressing confidence that Namibia has what it takes to host a successful tournament. He also doused fears that the country will be found wanting in the area of completing the construction of stadia
“We are here to officially invite the Prime Minister in his capacity as the Patron of the NFA and sincerely hope he will be able to attend the opening ceremony. So far, everything is in apple pie order and we are more than ready to stage a wonderful spectacle, all we need is just the support from the masses out there.”
Muinjo also extended best wishes to the Prime Minister on behalf of CAF President Issa Hayatou. On his part, Geingob applauded the NFA for taking the bold decision to preside over an event of such magnitude.
“These are exciting times for the entire country, because this event will serve be the trendsetter of more to come, this a good beginning for us to station ourselves for bigger sporting events. It might not be the FIFA World Cup but this is a big event and must be approached and treated as such”.
The likeable football crazy lawmaker also expressed satisfaction and confidence in the Namibian women’s football team, the Golden Brave Gladiators.
“Defeating Algeria twice in warm up matches is no mean feat and should serve as testament of our strengths. I’m therefore urging and appealing to all Namibians to come out in big numbers – VIVA Namibia!” Let’s go and shine! exploded Geingob amidst loud applause from the floor.
