ONGWEDIVA - Various humanitarian organisations are embarking on an initiative to supply food items and food vouchers to a number of people that were flooded and displaced by floods in Ohangwena region.

According to the chairperson of Ohangwena Regional Council, Erickson Ndawanifwa, a delegation from the Office of the Prime Minister has already assessed the situation of 230 households that fell victim to flood in that region. Among the donors, the World Food Programme will give N$700 worth of food vouchers to every affected household.

At least 490 individuals from six constituencies in Ohangwena region were affected by floods. The flooded constituencies include Engela, Oshikango, Ohangwena, Omulonga, Endola, and Ongenga. Apart from Ohangwena region, Oshana had 254 affected by the floods, according to the mayor of Oshakati Leonard Hango.

The flood victims were relocated from their homes to campgrounds where they were accommodated for close to three months. Majority of the displaced households in Oshakati were from Oshoopala location.

Hango said he is not aware of further assistance that will be given to the former victims in his town.  All the victims have since gone back to their homes as the floodwater subsided.
