Mboma shortlisted for BBC African award

Still fresh from scooping the Best International Athlete of the Year award at Friday’s Athletics Weekly Magazine Awards, Namibia’s sprinting sensation Christine Mboma is again on the verge of winning another international accolade.

Mboma was yesterday announced as one of the six shortlisted contenders for the prestigious 2021 BBC African Sports Personality of the Year award, where she is competing against Kenya’s veteran marathoner Eliud Kipchoge, who cemented his status in the men’s long-distance events when he won his second successive Olympic gold medal in Tokyo.

The 18-year-old Namibian teen will also be contesting against Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, who set an Olympic record in Tokyo as she defended the 1500m title she first won in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and also against South Africa’s para-athlete Ntando Mahlangu.

Senegal and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who signed for Chelsea from French side Rennes in September last year and was instrumental in the west London club’s Champions League success in May, is also in the running for the BBC African Sports Personality of the Year award.

South African swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker, who made waves in Tokyo where she not only won gold and silver medals but set new world and Olympic records in the 200m and 100m breaststroke events, completes the list of nominees for this year’s BBC African Sports Personality of the Year award.
