Elevating the standard mixology in Namibia

Mixology: The art and study of preparing, inventing and serving mixed drinks into cocktails; the in-depth study of the craft of mixing drinks. The art dates back to 1948.

For mixologist Nande Ishuna, the craft of making the perfect cocktail is inspired by a passion for creating memorable drink experiences, and fostering a culture of excellence in hospitality.

He is therefore pleased that mixology in Namibia is undergoing a transformation, and that the industry is making significant strides forward in popularity in recent years.

Ishuna, however, says there is  vast room for expansion and refinement to achieve international standards of excellence. He therefore offers mixology classes with the aim of contributing to this evolution by nurturing talent, fostering creativity and promoting a culture of excellence in beverages service.

“We eagerly call on all industry stakeholders to join us in helping to build and nurture a budding community for front-of-house staff members and the Namibian hospitality experience,” said the cocktail connoisseur.

Ishuna told VIBEZ! the mixology classes' programme was born out of a commitment to empower individuals with the art and skill of mixology, bar tending, and the art of service. “The vision is filling a gap and recognising the importance of mixology as a fundamental aspect of beverage service for the future of hospitality internationally. The programme aims to equip participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to excel in their craft, and contribute to the growth and innovation of the Namibian industry,” explained Ishuna on why he started the programme.

He said the response and participation in the mixology classes have been overwhelmingly positive, with the number of interested applicants reaching 72 for February and March.

“Enthusiasts and professionals have eagerly embraced the opportunity to enhance their mixology skills, with each session attracting a diverse group of individuals eager to learn and engage.”

The passionate mixologist facilitates the classes, with the goal being collaborations with industry experts, guest instructors  and partner organisations, which would further enrich the learning experience, providing participants with valuable insights and networking opportunities.

“The mixology classes accommodate a limited number of participants per session to ensure personalised attention and hands-on learning. With a focus on quality over quantity, each class caters to enthusiasts and professionals at various skill levels, fostering a supportive learning environment where individuals can grow and develop their talents,” he highlighted.

Ishuna added that the participants are welcome regardless of their level of experience in mixology, and whether they are newcomers seeking to explore the world of cocktails, or seasoned professionals looking to refine their skills.

Ishuna stated that the programme encourages curiosity, creativity and a passion for the craft.

“I invite all bar owners, restaurateurs, lodges, hotels to enrol their teams in this introductory course. We seek to reach all corners of our country, and influence change in as many parts as possible.”

Participants in the mixology classes stand to benefit from a comprehensive learning experience that covers a wide range of topics, including mixology techniques, cocktail recipes, service etiquette and product knowledge exploration.

He added: “Beyond acquiring valuable skills and knowledge, participants also can connect with like-minded individuals to build their professional network, and gain confidence in their abilities and learn to mix some fantastic drinks in the process.”
