Junior cricket tourney providing rare opportunities

With plans to give every child an opportunity to play cricket at an early age, Cricket Namibia (CN) is hosting a school tournament, which will see schools from Windhoek and Walvis Bay competing in a junior tournament.
The tournament started yesterday and will run until Thursday. The competition will see boys and girls between the
age of 11 and 19 taking part. According to the local cricket governing body, the aim is to give equal opportunity to all
kids to play cricket at a very young age.

“Cricket Namibia’s aim is to give every child the opportunity to play cricket and it is our vision to implement a structure that
allows equal opportunity, is fair to all players and transparent to all stakeholders. Considering the vast distances, amount,
and quality of exposure of our school players; our trial structures should also aim to create more opportunities to participate in competitive games while not neglecting any player irrespective of geography and therefore the National Week was established,” said Cricket Namibia.

“We also clearly identified the need for a national competition to increase strengths and playing opportunities for the
top players as well as longer format games.” Teams in divisions such as U/11, U/16 and U/19 boys will see them going against each other. Winning and runnerup teams in each age group will receive medals and also the winning teams will receive floating trophies while the best batsman and bowler in each age group will receive recognition.
