Karatekas set for action at AUSC Region 5 champions

The MTC Dome in Swakopmund is hosting the 18th edition of the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Karate Federation Championships, starting today and running through tomorrow.

Athletes from seven African countries are set to compete in both Kata and Kumite styles. Namibia is hosting Mozambique, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Angola. South Africa enters the competition as the defending champions.

Team Namibia boasts a contingent of 149 athletes, both male and female. The youngest competitor is just 10 years old, while the most seasoned member is 35, bringing a wealth of experience to the table.

Geneva de Jager, the public relations officer of the Namibia Karate Federation, highlighted the event’s significance as an Olympic qualifier. She noted that Namibian karatekas have never had the opportunity to compete in the Olympics due to the absence of gold medal victories. However, there is optimism that this competition will produce the first gold medals for Namibian karatekas.

While urging for strong support from the public, Stefan van der Merwe, the head coach of the national karate team, expressed: “I have high hopes for this team”, underscoring his confidence in the athletes’ potential to succeed on this important stage.

The event promises to be a thrilling showcase of talent and a crucial step for many athletes on their journey to the Olympics.
