Katutura dance competition to showcase local talent, unity

The Katutura dance competition is set to captivate audiences and celebrate the community’s rich cultural heritage tomorrow at Penduka Village in Windhoek.

The Katutura Dance Competition, founded by Mario De-Luke, known as Uncle $mall, as well as Joseph Branden, also known as Syclone Origin, is poised to bring together a variety of talents and inspiration. Katutura has long been a hotbed of creativity, with dancing serving as not just an art form, but also a means of healing and expression for its residents.

The competition, which originally began five years ago on a modest scale, has grown exponentially, mirroring the increasing pool of gifted dancers in the area.

“We see the immense talent and potential in our youth. In a time marked by unemployment and challenges, we want to offer a platform that could channel this energy positively,” said De-Luke.

He added that as Sounds of Katutura Music Festival, their love and passion for art, as well as the need to aid and give back to the community, are the driving force.

Time after time in history, the nation has failed many talented people as a result of lack of support, but as of now, the Sounds of Katutura musical festival will not allow history to repeat itself.

“Supporting talents and giving back to the community is our purpose. Sounds of Katutura intends to become a helping hand and hope to the hopeless in our era. This is not just a festival, but we stand for further beyond that. Sounds of Katutura includes career mentorship for the youth, and also educational financial assistance for the less fortunate in our community,” he said.   Apart from the competitions, there will be performances at the event by some local musicians, including Sunny Boy, Swart Baster, Syclone, Kamutonyo PDK, Benga Boy, I’vory, Elle Mwana ka Chokwe, Tashen, kid Johnson and Lil Saint. SaSa is the master of ceremonies.-priscillamukokobi@gmail.com
