Namundjebos treat elderly to early Christmas feast

OSHAKATI - Over 100 elderly citizens and members of various traditional authorities were on Sunday treated to early Christmas feast by the children of the late Eliakim and Theresia Namundjebo.

The Christmas party has been a long-standing annual tradition initiated by the late Eliakim Namundjebo in 2016.

The highlight of the party was the handing over of gifts by renowned businesswoman Martha Namundjebo-Tilahun at her late father’s residence in Olunghono village, Ohangwena region.

The event was graced by the Founding President Sam Nujoma, Ohangwena governor Sebastian Ndeitunga and Ohamba Martha Mwadinomho ya Nelumbu of Oukwanyama Traditional Authority, as well as religious, political and other traditional authority as well as community leaders.

Namundjebo-Tilahun said she felt honoured and happy to see all the elderly citizens in good spirits and good health saying they are the “walking libraries” of communities.

“They represent the true essence of knowledge. We really need to honour and appreciate them,” she added.

Namundjebo-Tilahun stressed that the elderly are the backbone of the community, and the centre of every child’s upbringing.

“The community and traditional authorities must be involved in the children’s upbringing, meaning if you see a child getting into danger, you should step in before even asking the child’s parents whether you can intervene,” she noted.

Namundjebo-Tilahun urged all public and private business entities to join hands to raise the children, and be involved in monitoring the upbringing of the children.

The elderly were treated to lunch, and given various Christmas hampers to take home.

Meanwhile, as the late Eliakim Namundjebo’s birthday is on 16 December, Namundjebo-Tilahun donated football kits and balls to a team named in honour of her late father.
