2025 hunting season dates, regulations announced

2025 hunting season dates, regulations announced

Chelva Wells

The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has announced the hunting season for huntable game and huntable game birds for 2025. This follows Cabinet approval and is in line with the Nature Conservation Ordinance of 1975.

Hunting of huntable game species will be allowed from 1 May to 31 August 2025 on commercial farms of at least 1 000 hectares with registered game-proof fences, and in registered conservancies with approved quotas, the ministry said in a media release on Tuesday.

On commercial farms of at least 1 000 hectares with an adequate fence, hunting will be allowed from 01 June to 31 July 2025, it added.
Huntable game includes kudu, oryx, springbok, warthog and bush pig, while huntable game birds include Burchell’s and Namaqua, sandgrouse, several francolins, crested guinea fowl, Egyptian goose and teal.

“As legislated, a limited number of game may be hunted during the hunting season – a total of three large game, or two large game and four small game or one large game and eight small game, or 12 small game. Only one kudu may be hunted per season,” the media release said.
Permits are required and are issued to farm owners, lessees or conservancy committees, not directly to hunters.

The ministry also reminded hunters that written invitations are required, and that there are restrictions on the transport and export of game meat and products, with additional veterinary requirements in place.
Automatic firearms and handguns are not permitted for hunting.
“The hunting season enables members of the public to hunt certain species of game on invitation of a farm owner, lessee of a farm or a registered conservancy,” it concluded.
