Twenty-one members of the Shack Dwellers Federation Namibia/Namibia Housing Action Group at Eenhana in the Ohangwena region will benefit from Phase Two of the federation’s efforts to address the pressing need for houses.
The federation hosted a brick-making event over the weekend that saw members and various stakeholders come to lend a helping hand to make the initiative a success.
The aim was to show support to those who respond to their own needs and to create awareness for all people living in the shacks, not only to wait for the Government to provide them with housing but to respond to this uphill challenge.
The event was part of an awareness creation campaign among the informal settlement residents aimed at achieving Vision 2030 says National Housing Action Group regional coordinator, Heinrich Amushila.
The Deputy Minister of Regional and Local Government, Housing and Rural Development, Kazenambo Kazenambo, called on Namibians and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to complement Government’s efforts to alleviate poverty, disease and unemployment.
He said Namibians should be vigilant and not allow tribal division but unite in fighting all negative vices.
Speaking at the same event was Afrisam Corporate Social Responsibility Professional, Nora Ndopu, speaking on behalf of Afrisam Namibia Manager, Johan Burger.
Ndopu said over the time the company has observed the unwavering faith of the members of the shack dwellers association thus it is committed to ensure that the communities are empowered to be able to participate in the economic development of the country.
“We have always seen the Shack Dwellers Federation as an appropriate community partner that we could join hands with to move our people from a certain level of poverty to a certain level of upliftment,” Ndopu said.
