Six candidates from different political parties will contest the regional councillor’s position in the Rundu West Rural Constituency in the Kavango Region in a by-election slated for January 11, next year.
The candidates are Rosa Kunyanda Kavara of the Swapo Party, Agrippina Runguro Mbambo, Namibia Democratic Movement for Change, Mathias Lipalu Munango of the Congress of Democrats, Lucius Kudumo Shikusho of DTA, Johannes Waha Sinonge of the Republican Party and Lucia Makunda Sitareni from National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo).
Speaking to New Era yesterday, the Director of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), Philemon Kanime, said final logistics for the elections are being put in place. The position fell vacant following the resignation of the Swapo Party Regional Councillor, Herbert Shixwameni, two months ago.
Kanime said preparations are going according to plan and campaigns have started.
The ECN Director said the atmosphere has been very peaceful and no incidents of intimidation or political violence have been reported to his office.
Kanime said the elections will start at 07h00 and end at 21h00 on January 11. Vote counting is expected to start an hour after voting closes and the results will be announced on completion.
