73-year-old implicated in N$658 564 theft

WINDHOEK – Two elderly men, one 52 years old and the other aged 73 were arrested together with a 27-year-old security guard and a 40-year-old for the alleged theft of cash of N$658 564.44.

 It is alleged that Vevangaune Uapingene, 27, was stationed as a security guard at Monte Christo service station and that he removed the safe keys from a steel cabinet and allegedly stole the cash together with his accomplices, Isaskar Metorapi, 40, Raphael Kanyenge, 52, and Thomas Katange, 73. The police have recovered N$145 860.75 of the stolen money.

The incident is alleged to have happened between 18 and 19 August between the hours of 20h00 and 05h00.

It was also reported that 28-year-old Shiimi Themus Hango hanged himself with an electrical cord in a tree near his parent’s home.

It is stated the body of Hango who was a member of the Namibian Defence Force stationed at Luiperdvallei military base was discovered by his mother at 07h00 yesterday morning. No suicide note was left behind and no foul play is suspected.

One suspected smash-and-grab thief was killed when the getaway vehicle he drove overturned, killing him instantly.

According to the police weekly crime report, a certain Mario Montero parked his Nissan bakkie at No. 60 Liberty Island Street in Rocky Crest at 22h23 on Saturday night when a Toyota Quantum stopped next to his vehicle.

Someone then smashed the window of the canopy, grabbed a bag with women’s clothing and sped off.

It is alleged Montero then chased after the thief’s car which overturned in Matsitsi Road between Otjomuise and Goreangab dam.

The driver, identified as Naftalie Nuuyango was thrown out of the vehicle and died on the spot, while his accomplice managed to escape. 

The bag was recovered from the minibus.

Twenty-year-old Erickson Twindeleni Jackson drowned in the Nawa Poort earth dam near Groot Aub on 22 August at 14h00. It is alleged he tried to swim across the dam. His body was retrieved by the Namibian Police Reserve Force members at 11h00 yesterday.
