WINDHOEK – Windhoek hosted the National All-Style Karate Championships last weekend, which is the flagship tourney on the Namibian karate calendar that saw all leading karatekas affiliated to the Namibia Karate Union competing for the highest honours locally.

A top quality display of kata (form) and kumite (fighting) was witnessed during the championships, which attracted over 120 contestants in the age groups of 8 to seniors in both the male and female categories (21 years and over).

Some of the contestants in action formed part of the Namibian team that represented the country at the Zone-6 championships where Namibia ended in 2nd place overall recently. Karate is also fortunate to have three nominees for the prestigious National Sports Awards slated for Saturday, October 25 2013.

The best performing male of the day was Diego Brandt, while the female award went to Mershall Jansen. The pair achieved top placing in kata and kumite for the senior categories.

“It is clear from the performances witnessed at the championships that karate in Namibia is developing strongly and that could only augur well for the future as Namibia will now comfortably compete on an international level, as has already been proven earlier this year at the Zone 6 championships,” said the president of the Namibia Karate Union, Stefanus van Staden.
