WINDHOEK

Windhoek, regarded as the cleanest city in Africa, was once again rated one of the highest-performing cities in social upliftment and was awarded the Diamond Arrow Award for its role in attracting foreign investment into the country.

The recognition comes in light of the Performance Management Review (PMR) survey conducted by PMR Africa last year.

Highlighting the achievement during the monthly City of Windhoek council meeting, Deputy Mayor, Councillor Elaine Trepper, said this is a remarkable accomplishment.

“This is an achievement we can all be proud of as residents of this beautiful city for our hard work, cooperation, dedication and goodwill towards a sustainable and prosperous future for all,” said Trepper.

She added that despite the numerous socio-economic challenges facing the capital, it still continues to be held in high acclaim by foreign guests and visitors. “The fact that the city continues to receive good reviews and acknowledgements for good performance should inspire us as residents of this city to continue striving for greater heights in our concerted efforts to make the city a vibrant and technological centre of excellence in Africa,” explained Trepper.

The latest PMR Survey states that the City of Windhoek scored the highest for cities/towns doing the most for social upliftment and attracting foreign and international investment.

In addition, the city was also positioned first among all towns in the local government sector of the country for doing the most in job-creation and for local investment.

This is the second time the PMR Africa rates the City of Windhoek as the highest in the Local Government (Cities/Towns) category. The first one was awarded in 2005. In view of this, Trepper noted that the city must continue to uphold this status with the involvement of residents through ongoing public participation.

“This Council is and remains convinced that it is only through our policy of public participation, as exemplified by our culture of consultative meetings with the community at large on issues pertaining to policies and procedures, that we will be able to fulfil our stated goal of making the city a vibrant and economic Centre of Excellence in Africa,” said Trepper during a monthly council meeting last Wednesday.

The PMR annual survey on Namibia is based on research conducted on achievers and most admired individuals and companies in the industry and government.
