Kunene police received a donation worth more than N$40 000 from the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication. The official handover took place last Saturday morning at the Opuwo police station.
Items donated included protective clothing and other tools for clearing purposes that will be used during a search and clean-up campaign of a 25-km stretch to the Etanga village, west of Opuwo.
Etanga is 120 km from Opuwo and has a stretch of 25 km that is still infested with explosive devices. The devices were first detected in 2003 by the Roads Contractor Company (RCC). The search and clean-up campaign started yesterday and ends after two weeks.
Deputy Commissioner Jonah Ngairorue led a delegation from Windhoek that dispatched the equipment, as well as a Toyota double cab pick-up to Kunene’s regional commander, Mandume Shifonono.
Shifonono together with other speakers including Epupa constituency councillor Mburura Kasita, who represented Governor Dudu Murorua, thanked the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication for the gesture.
