Theatre directors, actors and actresses who participated in the National Theatre of Namibia Theatre Zone Project over the period 2006-2007 can look forward to the 3rd Namibia Theatre Awards scheduled for November 10 2007.
Initiated in 2003, the Namibia Theatre Awards was instigated with the aim of honouring Namibia’s theatre practitioners. The awards ceremony is the only platform currently available in the country which serves to recognise and award theatre practitioners for their role in the development of theatre.
The Namibia Theatre Awards is held bi-annually and forms part of the NTN Theatre Zone Project. This project aims at assisting theatre directors financially and technically to stage their plays.
This year’s categories are Best Director, Best Male Actor, Best Female Actress, Best Supporting Role, Best Public Choice, Best Overall Play, Best Newcomer and Best Costumes, Stage Set and Quality Technical Presentation.
The nominees in these categories for the 2007 Namibia Theatre Awards will be announced at a media conference to be held on October 22 in the foyer of the National Theatre at 10h00.
The following theatre productions will compete in the different categories for the honours for 2007.
The Grave Manager by Lucky Pieters, The Bigamist and Katutura ’59 and The Mole People by Frederick B. Philander, The Case of Henry X by Kubbe Rispel, Sunset in the South by Joseph Molapong and Nangula’s Son by Dieter Friedrich, Lea B by Tania Terblanche, Comrade Head of State by Vickson Hangula and Ubu Roi by Queran Kannemeyer .
The wining prizes for this year’s awards total to N$71 000 with the support from the Embassy of Finland, Bank Windhoek, City of Windhoek, TBWA and FNB Namibia
