The City of Windhoek is planning to introduce surveillance cameras that will cover public infrastructure, tourist attraction venues and interested private enterprises, said Deputy Mayor, Elaine Trepper.

Speaking at an occasion to mark the first anniversary of the City Police on Saturday, Trepper said despite the fact that officers are well deployed in the streets and are accessible over a toll free number, incidents of preventable crime such as thefts of computers, copper wire cables and murder are still rampant in the city.

She said the use of electronic surveillance equipment is the only solution to effectively deal with such crime.

Trepper called on industry and the public to support the City Police through moral, material and financial support.

“I want to remind you that the City Police is ours, we should own it while the City of Windhoek manages it on our behalf. Therefore, its success depends on your unwavering support.”

Trepper warned against misusing the toll-free number and called on parents to caution their children. She called on the public to come forward with crime-related information early for the police to react and prevent the crime before it is committed.

“I should remind you that it is almost the end of the year, hence criminals are also planning to steal and break into other people’s houses. Contact the City Police to discuss your needs during the festive season.”

Of great concern to the City of Windhoek, Trepper said, is the flouting of the by-laws.

“The City is finalising codifications of its by-laws to enable police officers to issue fines to those found guilty of offences such as littering, illegal dumping, urinating in public, drinking liquor in public, noise pollution, loitering and squatting on municipal land.”

Plans are also underway to reward outstanding performance, she told the 128 officers who took part in a parade that started in Katutura and ended at Council House.
