IT is barely two weeks since I completed my final exams and I already have various feelings about my new street life.

A week after my exams, I caught up with my high school buddy in town. She is one of the fortunate people who started working immediately after school and so she does not know what it is like to be on the streets.

She asked me what I have been doing after almost a quarter of a decade at university. I replied that school is over and now I am just Zula in the Ghetto. She then told me that I am young, vibrant and full of life and I shouldn’t tell her that I am doing nothing. A little bit ashamed I nodded, giving in to my fate.

She asked me if I am a member of any political party since it is a thrilling topic at the moment. I replied that I have an intention to join John Ekongo’s PAO (Political Association for Ombwitis), but I am afraid that I don’t have any Ombwiti ties, they might end up marginalising me since I am just a typical village lady with no Afrikaans word in my vocabulary.

She interjected: “Listen to your former high school friend, you are now a former university student. Why waste time? Join a party where all former-something people belong, Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) for example.”

Unfortunately I missed the RDP gathering – even on television – not that I didn’t want to watch but apart from knowing of its existence, I was not aware of the exact date of its rally.

I asked my high school friend the attendance figure at the Independence Arena at the official launch day of RDP. She said it was about 1ǟ
