The Swapo Party retained the Rundu Rural West Constituency in the Kavango Region after its candidate, Rosa Kunyanda Kavara, won the by-election on Friday evening.

Kavara won the contest comfortably with 2 614 votes. Her closest rival, Johannes Waha Sinonge of the Republican Party (RP) managed only 377 votes.

DTA of Namibia’s Lucius Kudumo Shikusho was in third place with 354 votes, while the Congress of Democrats candidate, Mathias Lipalu Munango, got 259 votes.

The Namibia Democratic Movement for Change (NDMC), which indicated earlier through a press release that it had withdrawn from the by-election, obtained 27 votes, while Nudo’s Lucia Makunda Sitareni got 26 votes. Sixty-two votes were rejected.

The returning officer of the election, Thomas Shapi, said he was satisfied with the entire election process but was only disappointed by the low turnout. Only 3ǟ
