Lets talk upcoming AGAIN!

Home Time Out Lets talk upcoming AGAIN!

I get so annoyed by upcoming artists who are always in a rush to throw their products onto the social media. What is sad is their over reliance on social media as well. What is wrong with just being a little bit patient ano? What is wrong with the traditional way of doing things? I’m one that is perfectly placed in this industry to know that times have changed and that we live in a digital age. BUT! N A M I B I A is a special country. I mean, you should know that right?

The situation that currently presents itself is a bunch of useless singles that are in the public domain. This results in a reduced value of your face brand because investors will think you have no strategy to create buzz around your music. “Oh just throw unto soundcloud and hope for the best” mos?

Reality is this. Internet in Namibia is still in a developmental stage. This means that your single that you worked so “hard” on, will be seen by a few folks on social media…liked and um that’s that. What then? The Namibian consumer still has a traditional and conventional way of shopping. There is really nothing wrong or bad with that. That’s the market. You can’t change it. It can really only change through policy makers, economic factors blah blah blah but the onus is on you to device strategies on how to penetrate that market.

It certainly won’t be through the internet. One might debate that the internet user is your market. Fair enough maar omes, how do you make money? What is our motto again? #GMTM povi? GO MAKE THAT MONEY is dit nie? Do you think Namibians will go unto Itunes and kama buy your song? Nogal upcoming? Bruh, the day that happens…Shaduka will hand himself over to NAMPOL!

However if your mission is to break-even, Meme you will have to accept that the market still has a traditional way of doing things. Very few artists made it through social media in Namibia. Two good examples are StarDust and Paul Da Prince.

The traditional way of doing things are pretty straight forward. Create your material. Register it. Submit it to radio. Radio plays it. People like it. You create buzz around it. The song starts creating moments for people. I have observed with serious dismay at the sad trend that is gaining momentum amongst upcoming artists where they think that it is a radio stations “duty” to “promote” their material.

LOL

Did you know that there are different types of Radio Stations? I don’t mean Green apple and Red apple. I mean apples and oranges. Do you know that “Promotion” is a whole business on its own? I will get into this next week. For now, kindly do research. RESEARCH! RESEARCH! RESEARCH! That @#$% is vital! Why do you think big organisations such as FNB have R&D departments the size of Abuti Diescho’s head? What is R&D ti? #FixItBushili
