Home Time Out How to protect yourself  against heat exhaustion

Summer is often a favourite season for many. However when the heat gets a little too much and you find yourself exposed it can cause heat exhaustion and heat cramps, just to mention  a few.

To guide you through this warmth, natural health coach, Dunja Berger, from Naturally Healthy, have a few tips for you.

  • Stay out of the direct sun /outdoors- especially between ten O’clock  in the morning and three O’clock in the afternoon(10H00and 15H00) when the Ultraviolet B rays are at its most dangerous
  • Wear Sunscreen Daily – a minimum Sun Protection Factor(SPF) 30 is advised for our climate and UV exposure
  • Stay hydrated & Drink More Water – the body is 75% water – most pain and sickness is due to chronic dehydration in summer.
  • Avoid Spicy Foods or Foods High in Salt (Sodium) – these only dehydrate your body and create excess heat from within
  • Instead of indulging in Ice Cream – try a homemade ice lollie – they’re incredibly easy to make and contain less sugar than most bought ice cream brands
  • Instead of blasting the air con, (which are often a breeding ground for bacteria/fungus), take a quick shower, dip in the pool or cover yourself with a wet towel to cool down.
  • Lower your consumption of caffeine and alcohol – both act as a diuretic, making you urinate more and lose a lot of water and can result in dehydration
