Cricket Namibia (CN) is to host its first ever Women’s Cricket League this year, with the first matches to be played in the T20 format slated to start on Saturday in Windhoek. The aim of the Women’s League is to provide more competition and matches amongst women, thus growing the game and exposing more girls and women to cricket.

Four teams have confirmed their participation, with the Zebra Ladies and Windhoek High School Ladies representing the capital, while the Pro-Ed and Blue Waters Ladies hope to bring the maiden cup to the coast.

Women’s cricket has been on the rise throughout the globe in recent years. Besides the newly introduced league format, Namibia’s ladies have been actively involved on the continental stage, with the senior national and U19 teams having rubbed shoulders with Zimbabwe, South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana, Kenya and Uganda already.

These countries have strong teams, with Zimbabwe competing in the qualifying competition for a spot in next year’s T20 World Cup in India. The finals are scheduled for November. The venues will depend on the finalists.
