Home Crime and Courts [PDF] Judge Hoff’s seven-day Caprivi treason judgement

It took seven days for High Court Judge Elton Hoff to deliver his full judgement in the Caprivi treason trial in which 30 people were convicted of high treason, nine counts of murder and 90 counts of attempted murder. There were 122 people accused of high treason when the trial started in August 2004, 22 of those died during the course of the trial, while 35 were acquitted when the State closed its case in 2014 after they successfully applied for Rule 174 acquittal – that the State did not provide sufficient evidence to put them on defence. Out of the remaining 65 people, 35 people were acquitted during the course of delivering the judgement, which Judge Hoff started delivering on September 7 until September 14.
