Unlike in his first WBO Bantamweight world title defence against Japanese boxer Tomoki Kameda some two years ago, Namibia’s IBO Super Bantamweight world champion Paulus ‘The Rock’ Ambunda has promised to avoid errors when he defends his title against Jason Nugget Cooper from Australia.
Slated for the Ramatex Hall on December 5, in the capital, the ‘Dream On’ Boxing Bonanza will mark Ambunda’s first defence of his new International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Super Bantamweight world title.
A former World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Bantamweight world champion, Ambunda this year made history by becoming Namibia’s second only boxer to achieve the ‘’two-time world champion’’ status when he dispatched Argentina’s Leandro Esperante to clinch the IBO Super Bantamweight world crown. Legendary Harry Simon was Namibia’s first boxer to become a two-time world champion.
Now faced with another daunting task in the shape of the fast and furious Australian Cooper, the stocky hard-hitting Namibian yesterday promised to deliver one of greatest shows, which will be characterised by speed, power and most importantly, no errors.
“I won this title through hard work, so I’m not planning to lose it anytime soon. I will defend it as many times as possible. Physiologically, I’m prepared for the challenge and I promise that there won’t be any mistakes this time around, no mistakes I promise,” said a confident Ambunda.
As for the Australian, his career grew steadily when he became the Australian Global Champion shortly after turning professional in 2011 and further went to become a two-time Queensland Featherweight Champion in 2011 and 2012.
Between 2013 and 2014 he became the IBO Asia Pacific Champion and this year became WBA Oceanic Champion.
On his part, Promoter Nestor Tobias said; “We are looking forward to our first IBO world title defence and we will have more than enough time to carefully study Jason Cooper so that we can come up with an effective fight plan to ensure we remain victorious. We have to ensure that our first title defence on home soil is a success so that we attract bigger champions from the WBA, IBF, WBO and WBC in order to unify the titles which will be our next step,”
