The recent Windhoek Open Championships that took place in the capital marked the last event for 2015 on the Namibia Table Tennis Association (NTTA) calendar.

The Windhoek Open Championships not only produced high quality table tennis, but also saw some senior categories being re-implemented after a long absence.

Kean Tait really excelled during 2015 and narrowly missed gold against Dietrich Möwes in the U/18 singles. Tait then teamed up with Patrick Beggs to win the U/18 double title against a strong combination of Dietrich Möwes and Yannick Bohn.

Tjaart van der Walt, who was only playing in his 2nd tournament ever, surprised a number of his more experienced opponents when he secured the Plate title after defeating Rowani Diergaardt in the final.

In the U/18 ladies, Reese Saunderson continued her dominance and ended the year unbeaten in this category. Her main rival Kaitlyn Beukes took silver while bronze went to Ciara Thorburn.

Dietrich Möwes and Reese Saunderson had to fend off a strong challenge from Kaitlyn Beukes and Kean Tait to secure the junior mixed doubles title. Christa Mrozek won the senior ladies singles, which was played after a 17-year absence. Khutsifalo Sekolokwane who had to dig very deep to secure the silver medal against junior Reese Saunderson (bronze).

The senior ladies had no answer for the junior doubles pair of Kaitlyn Beukes and Reese Saunderson who won the senior ladies doubles title. Ramon Hansen was at his best to won the men’s gold medal in a tight final against Cui Yunke.

Cui Yunke and Fabian Tait won the men’s doubles title when the saw off Wayne Green and Thomas Zapata in the final.

Rudi Saunderson teamed up with his daughter Reese to edge out Wayne Green and Khutsifalo Sekolokwane for gold in the senior mixed doubles category. Senior mixed doubles were last played at the Windhoek Open in 1998. Wang Yuking secured the men’s plate title.

All focus will now shift to the AUSC Region 5 Championships, which Namibia will host from 8-13 December 2015 in Swakopmund at the Swakopmund Indoor Sports Centre (SISC). High quality table tennis is expected and most countries, including the two top-rated countries South Africa and Angola, have already confirmed their participation at this prestigious event.
