A security guard died after he and his friend were stabbed in the early hours of Tuesday morning in an altercation over cigarettes. The friend is said to be in a critical condition in the state hospital in Okahandja.

According to information availed to New Era, a gang of six men demanded cigarettes from the guard and his friend and the two said they did not have cigarettes, resulting in their being stabbed.

Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha of the Namibian Police’s public relations division for Otjozondjupa Region said on Tuesday that the incident happened at 2:30am near Lukas Bar in Nau-Aib location in Okahandja.

The security guard, who succumbed to his injuries, has been identified as Stephanus Katambu, 27.

He was stabbed in his chest. His next of kin have been informed. Katambu worked for 24/7 security company.

Katambu’s friend, Johannes Kaka, 38, who was escorting him was stabbed seven times all over his body. But he managed to run away, Mbeha said.

Mbeha said that Kaka was in a critical condition. He was admitted to the Okahandja State Hospital on Tuesday.
Kaka had just arrived from Outjo and did not know the house where he was supposed to stay. Katambu went to show him the house but on their way back they were attacked, Mbeha said on Tuesday.

Police arrested the six suspects on Tuesday. They are aged 15, 16, 18, 19, 20 and 31.
They would appear in the Okahandja Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
The incident happened four days after a Unam student lost his life in Windhoek.
