Home Crime and Courts Man collapses, dies in city centre

A 55-year-old man identified as Robert Joseph suddenly collapsed and died along Independence Avenue yesterday afternoon.

Nampol spokesperson Inspector Slogan Matheus said Joseph started trembling while he was smoking a cigarette he had bought from a street vendor and repeatedly said that he was stressed out because someone took his money, before he fell to the ground.

An eye-witness at the scene told New Era that the man had just exited a barbershop nearby where he had got his hair cut and bought a cigarette from a street vendor where he then stood and smoked, adding that the man was sweating profusely before he collapsed.

“He sat down and puffed his cigarette. Then he then got up and sat down again and started complaining that he is not feeling well. The said street vendor tried to hold him from behind to prevent him falling down, but he just collapsed and died,” the witness said.
