WINDHOEK– The Namibian film shop which opened recently at the Hosea Kutako International Airport to provide a platform where local filmmakers can deposit their local content as a distribution mechanism, ranks among the achievements of the Namibian Film Commission (NFC) for the 2014/2015 financial year.
As part of its mandate to support, encourage and promote the film development in Namibia, the NFC is also tasked to promote a local screening culture and film awareness of stories among our communities in all 14 regions. To expand its brand, make its mandate known to the public and its stakeholders at large as well as market its annual projects by taking the information to the people, NFC successfully took part in the AFCI location Show in Los Angelos, United States of America, Beijing international Film Festival in China, Cannes Film Festival in France, Bristol International Film festival in the United Kingdom, Durban film Festival in South Africa, Dubai international Film festival in the United Arab Emirates, Rotterdam Film Festival in The Netherlands and the Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin, Germany.
The NFC has so far supported several Namibian filmmakers and events to the tune of two more million Namibian Dollars, of which N$1 500 0000 went to the most supported project the “Katutura Movie’ In addition, the NFC values the importance of bringing cinema to the doorstep of people in rural areas, therefore allowing Namibian communities to view their own stories, which they can relate to instead of foreign content, which might not be relevant to them. With this, the NFC managed to extensively screen its movies in the Oshana, Oshikoto, Omaheke, Kavango West and Erongo regions.
