OPUWO – The fifth annual Omatako Super Cup football tournament will take place on Farm Enguruvau in the Otjozondjupa Region on Saturday and Sunday under the theme ‘Empowering youth through sports’.
Speaking to Nampa on Tuesday, one of the tournament’s organisers, Charles Hukununa, said the tournament is important for grassroots football because it enables new participants to improve their football abilities while having fun.
“It helps to develop local talent and improve their performance. This event aims to bring everyone together and provide equal access to football for everyone, regardless of colour or religion. It relates to the idea of empowering our young via sports in rural regions, particularly the Omatako constituency,” he said.
Hukununa thanked the major sponsor, unionist Eben Zarondo. He said Zarondo’s sponsorship would continue for three years in a row and it is through such combined efforts that young people will not be left behind in their sporting endeavours.
The top four teams will compete for a total of N$20 000, with the champions receiving N$10 000, a trophy and gold medals, and the runner-up receiving N$5 000 and silver medals. The losers of the semi-finals will each get N$2 500.
The competition will include 17 teams from the Okahandja, Omatako, Otjinene and Okurukambe constituencies.
The draw which was conducted last week placed Aurora against Zamalek and Swapo against Wete Wete. Remember Boys will face Omandindi Boys in a derby match, while Hochfeld United will attempt to capitalise on their home advantage when they face Jumbo United. Angels will take on King Waygu, while Otjomisaona, from the Otjinene constituency, will put their skills to the test against the underdogs, Black Everton.
