In the realm of boxing, every match holds the potential to redefine a career – and for former World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Africa Super Bantamweight champion Energy Nghitumbwa, the upcoming battle is nothing short of pivotal.
Determined to secure a shot at the world title, Nghitumbwa reflects on his last encounter with John Riel Casimero of the Philippines in May, a fight that ended in a unanimous decision, with judges scoring 114-112, 116-110 and 116-110.
Now, the 28-year-old warrior, boasting an impressive record of 15 fights with 13 victories and two losses, is poised for a face-off against South Africa’s Thato Bonokoane.
The stakes are high, with the vacant WBO Africa Super Bantamweight title up for grabs on 2 December 2023 in Windhoek.
In an interview with New Era Sport, Nghitumbwa emphasised the significance of this bout, stating, “This is a very important fight for me, given the setback I faced in my previous match. I will seize this opportunity to rewrite history and ensure a different outcome, despite the setback to my ranking in the previous match.
As he thoroughly prepares for the showdown, Nghitumbwa shares insights into his training routine. “Training is going well – twice a day – morning and afternoon. We’re making
progress, and although I’m not at my peak yet, I’ll be ready before 2 December. I have a dedicated sparring partner, and every day is a learning experience,” he stated. His opponent, Thato Bonokoane, reciprocated the anticipation of
this clash by issuing a stern warning via social media.
“I’ve been aspiring to be a champion, and I believe this is my time. I’m coming to give the fans and the people of Namibia an unforgettable fight. Energy, I know you, and I’ll see you in the ring,” Bonokoane declared.
Nestor Tobias, promoter and coach at MTC Sunshine Academy, foresees a tough contest between the two promising fighters. Expressing confidence in Nghitumbwa, he said, “This is a crucial fight for energy. He must win to secure a global ranking among the top fighters and position himself for a shot at the world title. Our focus is on winning the title and climbing the rankings,” he added.
