A young woman was expelled from a nursing school in Oshikango on Monday after a video of her that went viral was deemed ‘inappropriate’ by the
school.
Inconsolable while talking to New Era, 18-year-old Maria Edward said she was expelled from the Alba Chipamba training centre over the video that is trending on social media with the hashtag “Topa, laat ons gaan”.
In the video, the young woman, dressed in a nursing uniform, is seated in a car, dancing to music, while holding a glass containing a dark maroon/brownish drink.
Edward claimed that she took the video in February and immediately shared it with her cousins.
“It was my first day at the college and I was just excited to show them that I had made it [to nursing]. I was not aware of the nursing rules until the following day… I immediately asked my cousins to never share the video,” she maintained.
But recently, one of her cousins allegedly shared the video with his friend who shared it on social media. Unaware of the hype it had caused on social media, the young woman stated that she was only made aware of the video during the disciplinary hearing.
She said the disciplinary committee was not interested in her pleas and explanations but rather accused her of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol when she took the video.
Alba Chipamba, where Edward was admitted as a first-year student, could not deny or confirm her dismissal, only saying it’s an internal matter.
The woman’s cousin who allegedly leaked the video said he shared the video on his WhatsApp status for fun and a few of his classmates requested him to share it with them. He claimed that he was not aware that the video would go viral or cause any damage.
Nanso spokesperson Dorthea Nangolo said the students’ organisation will stand up for Edward.
“If Alba fails to provide us with facts and they still refuse to take her back, we will be forced to shut down the school or take the matter to court,” added Nangolo.
