Gebhardt bids farewell to national duty

Namibia’s stalwart defender Ananias Gebhardt yesterday used Instagram to announce his retirement from the national football scene.

The 35-year-old left-back was recently called up for national duty as the Brave Warriors gear up for the Fifa World Cup qualifiers, as well as the Cosafa Cup tournament.

However, the player, who currently represents South African First Division side Baroka, has decided to retire, further expressed profound gratitude for the honour of donning the Warriors’ jersey, and took a moment to reflect on his illustrious career.

Making his national debut in July 2011, Gebhardt’s journey was adorned with triumphs, notably securing the 2015 Cosafa Cup and the 2016 Cosafa Plate titles with the national squad.

His leadership qualities were further showcased, as he served as vice captain of the team on numerous occasions, playing an instrumental role in clinching the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifications in 2019 and 2023.

In a heartfelt message, Gebhardt conveyed, “It has always been an honour to represent my country. I poured my heart and soul into every match, embodying the spirit of a true Warrior. My deepest gratitude to everyone involved with the team, as well as my loyal supporters. We shared unforgettable moments, especially with my teammates”.

He continued, “You all are a remarkable generation. Despite the challenges of an inactive league, we defied the odds and secured berths in two Afcon editions. Keep striving for excellence,” he said.

Riaan Hanamub, one of Gebhardt’s teammates, extended warm wishes for his future endeavours, acknowledging him as a true leader and professional who embodies integrity.
