President Nangolo Mbumba has offered his condolences to the family of the late Windhoek West constituency councillor György Trepper, describing him as a dedicated public servant.

Trepper, Mbumba said, served the residents of his constituency with utmost dedication between 2014 and 2020.

“He was highly accessible to the residents and will be remembered for his commitment to the development of his constituency and the country at large,” he said.

“On behalf of the people and the government of the Republic of Namibia, I extend condolences to his wife, the family, and the Swapo Party, which lost a committed and dependable comrade,” he said.

Trepper took over the Windhoek constituency office in 2014, replacing Shikwetepo Haindongo, who died in the same year.

Aina Shikukumwa, a former control administrative officer at the Windhoek West constituency office, described the late Trepper as a dedicated and visionary politician whose leadership was characterised by a clear vision, strong political will and a commitment to ethical values.

“He was a caring person who worked for the interests of his constituency. He was a caring councillor who went the extra mile to attend to the vulnerable and needy people in the constituency. Our constituency was not classified as vulnerable; hence, we were not receiving lots of funds. However, the late Trepper could use his money to buy food and other basic necessities for those vulnerable and street children,” Shikukumwa said.

At the political level, she described the late Trepper as a good mobiliser, who managed to establish structures and Swapo branches in the constituency.

She told New Era that it was the late Trepper’s dream to see the government construct a student village to accommodate hundreds of students who are struggling with accommodation.

Trepper died at the age of 78 in a Windhoek hospital last Saturday. He was buried on Monday, as per Jewish customs and traditions. However, the mourning period will continue until next Monday.

He is survived by his wife and son.
