Tonight at Vinyls, Open Mic Night will host another poetry session. This edition themed ‘Love in All Colours’ celebrates pride month and focuses on the LGBTQ+ community, in light of the recent High Court ruling decriminalising same-sex relationships.
Poetess Jemima Ndebele said Namibia is home to many gifted poets and writers. “Through Vinyls Poetry Night and its sister event, Open Mic Night, we aim to provide space for poets to showcase their work, exchange ideas and engage with an invested audience,” she said.
Vinyls Poetry Night was created to provide a safe space to celebrate poetry and its interaction with other art forms, such as visual arts and music. At the event, patrons can also enjoy the artwork of Edwina Bezuidenhoudt, also known as the Artistic Misfit, and a piano performance by Kudakwashe Bobo.
“Our platform encourages poets to express their hearts and art openly. Attendees can expect an intimate look into the hearts and minds of those whose love has been deemed morally incoherent. Guests can expect to experience a night filled with diverse poems by six incredible poets exploring this theme, and a performance by musician Gun Jade that is guaranteed to amaze,” she said.
Ndebele urged poets to trust themselves and their talents and greatness and also learn to be patient and give themselves grace.
“Networking and collaborating with like-minded creatives are also crucial. Surround yourself with established figures in the industry, as they are often willing to share insights and wisdom gained from their experiences. By doing this, and remaining humble and studious, you can establish yourself in this dynamic space.
“Poetry has always been my first love, and my work as a journalist is an extension of that passion. Crafting stories that spark conversation and raise awareness about community issues aligns with my love for poetry. Balancing these roles is challenging, as journalism can be demanding, yet rewarding,” she said.
Ndebele added: “There are times when my journalism takes precedence, leaving little time for poetry and other times poetry dominates my thoughts, influencing my journalistic writing with poetic elements. Nonetheless, I find joy in both pursuits as writing, whether creatively or journalistically, brings me immense satisfaction.”
