Johan Casper’s journey from player to prisoner to coach

AUS – Johan Casper, a man in his late 40s, is making a big impact in his community through football.

Originally from Aus, a settlement in the //Kharas region of southern Namibia, he has dedicated his life to helping young players.

Aus lies along the B4 national road and the railway line, about 230 km west of Keetmanshoop and 125km east of Lüderitz.

It is part of the !Nami!Nûs electoral constituency, and Casper takes great pride in representing his hometown.

Growing up, he played football with older, talented players, who taught him the game, and important lessons about discipline and teamwork.

“Being on time and following rules were key,” he said.

He fondly remembers the guidance he received and how it shaped his love for the sport.

In 2006, his football dreams were shattered when he broke his leg.

This injury ended his playing career, but it opened a new path for him as a coach.

Casper also faced personal challenges during this time, including spending time in jail, which forced him to re-evaluate his life and goals.

“I have always been a leader. I want to help young people learn and grow,” he said.

Today, he focuses on training youth in Aus.  He values respect and hard work.

“I want to see them succeed – not just in sports, but in life,” he added.

Despite his dedication, he faces challenges.

Financial issues make it difficult to provide the support he wants for the youth.

“I wish I could do more, but I will keep trying,” he stated.

Casper lives with his elderly mother, as he lost many possessions while in jail years ago.

“I want to guide the youth so they don’t end up where I was,” he
shared.

He hopes that one day they will build a strong community together.

Recently, the Lüderitz Town Council announced plans to develop Aus, aiming to enhance infrastructure and housing in the area.

These initiatives include the establishment of low-cost housing and improvements to public services, which will benefit the residents and support growth in the settlement.

His dream is to improve the local football field, and bring attention to the talent in Aus.

“I want people to see what we can do,” Casper said.

“We deserve better facilities for our players,” he noted.

He continues to inspire others through his love for football and his commitment to the youth.

He said, “Together, we can create a brighter future.”
