Youth urged to embrace agriculture

Youth urged to embrace agriculture

Omusati governor Erginus Endjala says the youth possess the physical energy and brain power required to succeed in farming.

He said he does not understand why most young people do not recognise the opportunities and financial potential in agriculture.

“Young people have a belief that farming is for the elderly, but in fact, agriculture is for young people, since they are energetic, and their brains are still sharp. The youth have the right resources at their disposal, and are in tune with new developments that can make agriculture easier,” he said.

Besides the employment opportunities that agriculture can offer the youth, he said it has the power to transform the economic landscape of the country and address issues regarding food security.

“As a country, we spend a lot of money on importing agricultural products that we have the means to produce in our country. You don’t only produce what you need, but you should produce more and make money from selling the surplus,” he added.

He encouraged young people who reside near reliable water sources, such as the canal in the Omusati region, to start gardening to produce their food and sell some products to earn an income, instead of suffering from poverty.
