OSHAKATI – Oshana region on Monday welcomed home its regional debate team following a win of the Namport debate competition at the just-ended Maritime week in Walvisbay.
The team scooped first position,
winning N$500 000 in sponsorship and a floating trophy. In addition, each learner received N$5 000.
The chief regional officer, Teopolina Hamutumua, who was in a jovial mood, said the debate team’s win for the whole region.
She said the debate champions have set a great example for their peers.
She encouraged the team to continue to using their voices to make a meaningful impact.
“You have demonstrated not only exceptional speaking skills but also the power of critical thinking. Your teamwork and perseverance to winning this championship is a testament to your ability to express ideas confidently, tackle tough questions, and engage in meaningful dialogue,” she said.
In the same vein, she sang praises of the teachers involved with the team, and encouraged others to continue inspiring learners to take part in debate.
“Their victory is a reflection of your annual wavering guidance, mentorship and countless hours you invested in shaping their skills. Your ability to inspire, challenge and nurture their potential has been a key to their success. You not only helped them master the art of debating but also instilled confidence, discipline and the love for learning that will stay with them throughout their lives,” she remarked.
Also speaking at the same occasion, Andreas Amundjindi, a member of parliament and the Constituency Councillor for Uukwiyu-Uushona, told the debate champions that they won because they are disciplined and consistent in their debate.
“To succeed is about discipline. You only succeeded because you are disciplined and consistent. If there was no consistency, you could not be able to take up position number one. We are proud of you,” he exclaimed.
He expressed concern with the number of boys in the regional team, and encouraged the teachers to ensure that the boys also take part in the debate.
“Teachers, encourage the boys to take part or participate in debate. I know to educate a woman, you educate a nation, but let us not leave the boy child behind. They are all a Namibian child,” he urged.
