Namibia’s impressive seven-game unbeaten run against Zimbabwe ended yesterday afternoon after the Brave Warriors succumbed to a disappointing 1-0 defeat in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg. 

The loss was a bitter pill for the Namibian team, who had been riding high on their previous successes against their neighbours.

The match started with palpable tension as both teams sought to assert their dominance on the field. Zimbabwe, returning from a year-long FIFA ban, was determined to prove that they have what it takes and their efforts bore fruit in the 32nd minute when Khama Billiat scored a penalty after Namibia conceded a foul in the box. 

Despite goalkeeper Edward Maova diving the right direction, he lacked the strength to prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net. As the second half commenced, Namibia regrouped and fought hard to level the score. In the early minutes, star striker Peter Shalulile had a promising opportunity to bring his team back into the game. 

He jumped to connect with a cross, but his powerful header was expertly blocked by Zimbabwe’s Washington Maripi, who showcased his goalkeeping skills. Just moments later, Prins Tjuiza received a well-placed pass from Bethuel Muzeu inside the box. However, his snap shot was easily thwarted by Maripi, who continued to frustrate the Namibian attack.

The pressure was mounting, and Namibia desperately sought to find their rhythm. In the 57th minute, Kennedy Amutenya’s header connected with a free kick, but once again, Maripi denied the Brave Warriors. 

Namibia’s determination was evident as they pressed forward, but time was not on their side. In the 84th minute, Shalulile had another chance to change the tide, but his header from a cross by Riaan Hanamub went wide.

With the match ending in favour of Zimbabwe, Namibia will look to bounce back in the return match at the same venue on Monday.
