SWAKOPMUND – Landless People’s Movement councillor Blasius Goraseb has been elected as Swakopmund mayor. 

Meanwhile, Swapo’s Suama Kautondokwa was elected as the town’s deputy mayor on Friday.

The two replace Independent Patriots for Change’s Dina Namubes and United Democratic Front’s David Am-!Gabeb respectively, who were also nominees for the positions.

In his acceptance speech, Goraseb recognised the importance of sustainable solutions to food security challenges and the need to promote urban farming and other innovative agricultural practices.

These initiatives, support livelihoods, enhance resilience to environmental challenges, and strengthen food security at the town.

With a passion for sports and cultural identity, the mayor promised investments in sports facilities, youth programmes, and artistic initiatives.

“Swakopmund is rich in talent and cultural heritage. By nurturing young athletes and promoting artistic expression, we will position our town as a hub for creativity and excellence,” he stated. They also want to ensure safety for residents and visitors and are committed to working closely with law enforcement and other stakeholders to maintain the town’s reputation as a secure and attractive tourist destination.

“Collaboration is key in achieving our goals. Together, we will address challenges, and build consensus around our shared vision for Swakopmund,” the mayor emphasised.

He also pledged to prioritise economic growth by supporting local businesses, fostering youth entrepreneurship, and attracting investment.

“Economic growth is the backbone of a thriving community. By leveraging Swakopmund’s unique strengths, we aim to create sustainable economic opportunities for all,” he affirmed.

The members of the management committee for the upcoming term are Swakopmund Residents Association’s Wilfried Groenewald, who was elected as chairperson, and Swapo’s Erkkie Shitana as alternate chairperson. Swakopmund Residents Association, Matthias Heinrichsen and Swapo’s Hafeni Nghidipaya are the other two members. IPC’s Dina Namubes, Peter Shimhanda, Claus Goldbeck and UDF’s Dawid Am-!Gabeb are ordinary council members.
